What is 'Asiático' coffee?

Asiático, an ancestral drink native of Cartagena, that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when sailors from Asia ordered a coffee with condensed milk and brandy on their arrival in Cartagena. This is where it gets its name from and the basis for its original recipe, which years later has evolved into the drink we know today, adding 'Licor 43' liqueur, cinnamon and lemon rind.

Originally known as ’Copa Campana Fuerte’, it was first manufactured by the ’La Unión Vidriera de España, S.A.’ factory in Santa Lucía (Cartagena) in 1908. Very popular in the Cartagena of that time, it was originally used for vermouth and wine. Originally it had a stem, but due to the fact that it was almost exclusively used for drinking ’Asiático’ coffee, it was removed sometime between 1932 and 1934 in order to become more stable on the waiter’s tray, thus becoming the glass it is today, where the stem and the bowl are together. In 1945 the company JOSÉ DÍAZ to strengthen the glass, sent it to the factory Vidur in Barcelona to manufacture in stressed glass, resulting in the current glass.
